Humanities
Connect with Your Greatness: The Humanities curriculum at Oaktree promotes growth across each of the three journeys, supporting students in developing meaningful connections with themselves, their communities and the world.
Journey 1: students explore the world through a multi-sensory approach, engaging with Geography, History and Religious Education (RE). For Non Subject Specific learners, this is delivered as Knowledge and Understanding of the World, providing a foundation for all Humanities concepts. Geography is particularly emphasised, fostering an understanding of the world and focusing on preparation for adulthood. Topics are explored holistically using practical, sensory-based activities, encouraging curiosity and real-world connections.
Journey 2: integrates Art with Humanities, helping students understand chronology, cultural connections and their sense of belonging. Students delve deeper into History, Geography and RE through structured projects with a focus on artistic expression. This approach enhances their understanding of time, process and cultural heritage while encouraging critical thinking. Geography continues to build independence skills and cross-curricular activities foster SMSC development and Fundamental British Values.
Journey 3: focusses on analytical and critical thinking, with students engaging in discrete lessons and small research projects in History, Geography and RE. Study visits to cultural sites and places of worship bring learning to life, enriching cultural understanding. Drama and whole school curriculum weeks deepen engagement, while the emphasis on preparation for adulthood and nuanced thinking equips students with the skills needed to thrive as informed, responsible citizens.
Through these journeys, the Humanities curriculum at Oaktree empowers students to connect with their greatness by cultivating curiosity, resilience and a lifelong love of learning. Each journey reflects the school’s commitment to holistic development, ensuring every student thrives academically, socially and emotionally.
