Connect with Your Greatness: The English curriculum at Oaktree promotes growth across each of the three journeys, supporting students in developing meaningful connections with themselves, their communities and the world.
Journey 1: Our English curriculum champions communication, creativity and a passion for language, tailored to the needs of SEND learners at the earliest stages of their development. Using the NSS curriculum, Equals schemes of work and sensory-rich, play-based methods, we focus on fostering early communication and engagement skills. Activities structured around maximising engagement promote interaction, exploration and foundational literacy, creating a supportive and enjoyable learning environment.
Journey 2: Designed to nurture independence and creativity, this journey builds core skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. With schemes such as Literacy Shed and Ruth Miskin’s Read Write Inc. RWI phonics programme, students engage with imaginative tasks that explore various genres. Through storytelling and practical activities, we empower learners to communicate effectively, laying a strong foundation for further learning, including for Entry Level exams and active participation in society.
Journey 3: This journey also prepares students for adulthood, substantiating this with exams such as Entry Level and GCSEs. Following the Hamilton scheme, learners explore a wide range of genres, with opportunities to analyse and create texts. With a continued emphasis on RWI phonics wherever needed, we ensure sustained literacy development, equipping students with the tools for independence and meaningful contributions to their communities.
Through these journeys, the English curriculum at Oaktree empowers students to connect with their greatness by cultivating curiosity, resilience and a lifelong love of learning. Each journey reflects the school’s commitment to holistic development, ensuring every student thrives academically, socially and emotionally.
